São Miguel – Things to do and places to see
São Miguel is the biggest island in the Azores Archipelago. In this island you will find places and magical landscapes that make this one of the islands most visited by tourists throughout the year. Full of green lands make it also known as the Green Island .
To know and visit – minimally – the island of San Miguel we recommend a stay of 3 to 7 days so that you can have sufficient availability to explore the island and enjoy your time in various activities available.

There is no specific season of the year to visit the island. Throughout the year its temperatures and humidity are always in tune. This allows you to enjoy São Miguel at any time of the year. Even so, the summer months are when the tourist rate is highest.
It should be noted that, given its typical and characteristic climate, in the same day, it may witness rain, sun, cloudy or clean skies. There are also areas where it is raining in the South of the Island while in the North of the Island there is Sun. As you can see an authentic paradise with mixtures of various weather states.

How to get to São Miguel Island

Places to visit in São Miguel
From the natural pools of hot water to the various lagoons that exist all over the island, there are several points and places of interest, a must for anyone visiting the island of São Miguel.
While traveling to visit the sites below you can go through several sightseeing spots and other places of interest, do not hesitate to stop at all of them. You can see various parts of the island and the sea from other perspectives.
Grota do Inferno Viewpoint
n several promotion campaigns of the Azores destination you have certainly seen this image of the Grota do Inferno Viewpoint. It is possible to appreciate from this view the Lagoa das Sete Cidades, Lagoa Rasa, Lagoa do Canário, Lagoa de Santiago and also an area of the parish of Sete Cidades.
Being at 730 meters of altitude in this magical place, you can see the sea, the mountains and the lagoons. A place of excellence.
Sete Cidades Lagoon
The Green and Blue lagoons that made the Lagoa das Sete Cidades are one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. A must see location. You can enjoy its panoramic view through the viewpoint of Vista do Rei. We also recommend that you visit the parish of Sete Cidades where you can enjoy more closely the beauty of the Lagoon.
Ponta da Ferraria
This is a bathing area with unique features where thermal springs are found, and you can enjoy a bath in warm waters in full sea water, given the area where the springs are.
It is also in this place that you can find the Ferraria Thermal Baths with various SPA services.
Lagoa do Fogo
Like Lagoa das Sete Cidades, listed above, Lagoa do Fogo is also one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. This is the second largest lagoon on the island. In this place there is a dormant volcano and was formed about 15,000 years ago. In this area you can also choose to take a Pedestrian Trail and get to know the lagoon more closely.
Termas das Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande
This is one of the places where you can enjoy live volcanic boilers on the island of São Miguel, with its steaming waters and high temperatures. In this zone is also available a cooking area with nine holes available.
Cascata do Salto do Cabrito
Near the Termas das Caldeiras (above listed), in Ribeira Grande, you can make a small trail where you will find the beautiful Cascade of Salto do Cabrito. With about 40 meters of altitude you can appreciate the pure water fall of this cascade. The access can be made near the Ribeira Grande boiler area through a pedestrian trail that starts alongside a geothermal power plant (Pico Vermelho).
A small locality of Lagoa city where you can enjoy its bathing area. The landscape around its natural pool are one of the great attractions of the locality. It is also in this area that is the fishing port of Caloura.
Not far from the beach area, get to know and enjoy Praia da Caloura. A beach for total relaxation in a place with extraordinary beauty.
Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo
The Ilhéu of Vila Franca do Campo is one of the biggest attractions of this county. The islet is a crater of an ancient submarine volcano classified as a nature reserve. Its natural swimming pool, circular in its interior – in connection with the sea by a narrow passage – make this place an excellent choice to enjoy moments of relaxation. You can also practice swimming and diving.

Vale das Furnas
Vale das Furnas is located in the locality of Furnas and is one of the places in São Miguel where you can enjoy close-up volcanic activity still existing on the island. Must visit the area of the Furnas Caldeiras, where the characteristic smell of sulfur is always present in the air.
Lagoa das Furnas
You can get to know the nearby Lagoa das Furnas by a pedestrian path or simply enjoy all its beauty during the drive. It lies alongside the regional road in its large dimension.
It is in this area that the famous Furnas Caldeiras are found, where the ” Cozido das Furnas” – a typical Portuguese stew cooked in holes under the ground is made.
Parque Terra Nostra
It is in Terra Nostra Park that you can enjoy and find endemic flora of the Azores in one place, as well as in other countries. A team of gardeners daily takes care of and preserves all the plantation.Many of them come from countries with completely different climates from those found in the Vale das Furnas.
In this place you will find the largest hot water tank, built in 1780, present on the island. You will enjoy a unique experience in a relaxing bath with thermal characteristics.
Poça da Dona Beija
Like Terra Nostra Park, in Poça da Dona Beija you will find several pools of warm water. You can enjoy relaxing thermal baths in pools of various depths.
In the neighboring locality of Furnas, in Ribeira Quente, you can enjoy one of its greatest attractions: Praia da Ribeira Quente or Praia do Fogo. A unique beach in a quiet area.
The name Praia do Fogo arises from the existence of several submarine hydrothermal springs, which make the water warmer. Sometimes, and in some areas, it is possible to feel the warm sand under the sea water. A unique sensation.
Salto do Prego – Sanguinho – Faial da Terra
The waterfall of the Salto do Prego (Sanguinho) in Faial da Terra, can be visited through a pedestrian trail with 4.5km and a duration of 2 hours. An average difficulty course. Upon reaching the waterfall you will feel a unique feeling of beauty and nature in a unique and magical place.
Ribeira dos Caldeirões
Located in the Northeast, Ribeira dos Caldeirões is a place with history. This is one of the most visited places in this county given its great natural beauty, waterfall and mills. Water mills that were part of the history of the Northeast and that – still today – it is possible to see how the corn was ground in other times.
