History of Grená
The Grená and its surrounding land were acquired and built in the 1950s by a former English consul. Later, after changing ownership, it was purchased by the state in 1987.
The property served and even operated previously as accommodation for those wishing to stay in one of the most incredible places on the island of São Miguel. Thus, the state acquired the entire property, which also includes a wooded park, a watercourse crossed by a bridge, a garden, and the small palace. Although it was purchased for high-ranking state officials to enjoy their stay on the Green Island, this never happened, and the entire property ended up abandoned, particularly with the deterioration of the building.
Later, in 2018, after the entire property was transferred to the Regional Government, it was put up for public auction and was acquired by Russian entrepreneurs, already with businesses in the Municipality of Povoação, for the sum of 500,000 euros.
In December 2019, news of its reopening emerged, in a completely renewed, cared for, and cleaned space. Thus, Grená Park is reborn.
Grená Park
After several years of abandonment, accumulating a lot of trash and degradation, and having been acquired – as mentioned above – a large team undertook the cleaning and recovery of this vast park.
Over 3 tons of trash were removed, and there was also an intense control of invasive plant species. Thus, the treasure that this park represents, with all its beauty and charm, is back and can now be appreciated by nature lovers.
According to the official Facebook page of this park: “Thus, Grená aims to restore to the Azoreans and all those who visit us the pleasure of enjoying a worthy location that honors Mother Nature, representing us not only as a Region but also as a world-renowned paradise.”
