It is called Vista do Rei Viewpoint, located in Sete Cidades – Ponta Delgada Municipality – on the Island of São Miguel. This is one of the most popular viewpoints sought after by tourists, offering a privileged view of the beautiful Sete Cidades Lagoon.
“Vista do Rei Viewpoint” is named after the visit of King D. Carlos I and Queen D. Amélia on July 6, 1901, during their royal visit to the island of São Miguel.

It is not always possible to see the Sete Cidades Lagoon and the parish of Sete Cidades, as this area often experiences heavy fog. We recommend checking the real-time weather through SpotAzores before heading to this viewpoint.

Next to the Vista do Rei Viewpoint, you will find a building – currently abandoned – where a hotel once operated. The Monte Palace Hotel was open for only one year (from 1989 until the end of …). If you’re curious to know more about this hotel and the reason for its closure/abandonment, you can also find photos of before and after here.
