Stunning Images of the “Vineyard Landscape” on Pico Island

The Cultural Landscape of the Vineyard of Pico on Pico Island covers a total area of 987 hectares, partially encompassing the northern, southern, and western coasts of the island. It includes two iconic sites: Lajido da Criação Velha and Lajido de Santa Luzia, both set in extensive lava fields known for their natural and scenic beauty.

This area features a fantastic network of long stone walls (spaced out) that run parallel to the coast and extend inland. The primary purpose of these walls is to protect the vines from wind and sea spray. These vines are planted in thousands of rectangular plots, closely packed together, creating a stunning landscape.
