The Pico Island Vineyard Culture Landscape on Pico island covers a total area of 987 hectares and partially extends along the north, south, and west coasts of the island. It features two emblematic sites, Lajido da Criação Velha and Santa Luzia, both set on vast lava fields renowned for their rich natural beauty and stunning scenery.
This area is composed of a fantastic network of long stone walls that run parallel to the coast and stretch inland. The main purpose of these walls is to protect the grapevines from the wind and sea spray. The vines are planted in thousands of adjoining rectangular plots, creating a breathtaking landscape.
The vineyard culture landscape is protected by UNESCO, which has undertaken several initiatives for its restoration and maintenance.
You can admire this landscape in the video below, filmed from Criação Velha, which offers a fantastic view of these vineyards on Pico Island.
