History of Parque Terra Nostra
Founded over 200 years ago in Furnas, its history dates back to the 18th century with the first settlers of the region.
The U.S. consul in São Miguel, Thomas Hickling, initiated the first constructions in the area, building a wooden house called Yankee Hall and a water tank with an island in the middle, surrounded by trees.
In the 19th century, Yankee Hall was replaced by the current house of Parque Terra Nostra, under the responsibility of the Viscount of Praia in 1854. Lovers of gardening, the Viscount and his wife invested in the original two hectares, transforming it into a beautiful garden.

The early 20th century was difficult for Parque Terra Nostra, which faced degradation issues. However, thanks to the Sociedade Terra Nostra, under the care of Vasco Bensaúde, the park underwent a fundamental restoration process.
Today, Parque Terra Nostra is one of the most important parks in Portugal and the world. So much so that the Condé Nast Travel magazine named it one of the most beautiful in the world. The dedicated gardeners involved in the restoration process were responsible for this achievement.
Attractions
Parque Terra Nostra has many attractions for visitors. For nature lovers, the park covers 12.5 hectares with an immense variety of plants and trees.

To facilitate the visit, the park offers maps with paths and trails, and depending on the season, the landscape can undergo transformations, such as the growth of new species. In autumn, the yellow leaves that fill the various paths make for excellent photography.
