History of Terra Nostra Park

Founded more than 200 years ago in Furnas, its history dates back to the 18th century, with the first settlers of the region.

The United States consul in San Miguel, Thomas Hichling , began the first constructions in the area, building a wooden house that he called the Yankee Hall and a water tank with an island in the middle, surrounded by trees.

In the 19th century, Yankee Hall was replaced by the current home of Terra Nostra Park, under the responsibility of the Viscount of Praia, in the year 1854. Lovers of gardening, the Viscount and his wife invested in the two original acres, transforming it into a beautiful garden.

Today, Terra Nostra Park is one of the most important parks in Portugal and the world. So much so that Condé Nast Travel Magazine has chosen it as one of the most beautiful in the world . The great gardeners involved in the restoration process were responsible for this achievement.
