Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa: “Going to the Azores and not swimming is like going to Rome and not seeing the Pope”

The President of the Republic, **Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa**, made an official visit to the Eastern Group (São Miguel and Santa Maria) in October 2017.

He didn’t miss the opportunity to take a dip in the Azorean sea and on his last day, he swam at the Piscina do Pesqueiro, near the Portas do Mar in Ponta Delgada – São Miguel.

According to the accompanying journalists, Marcelo repeatedly said he didn’t want to leave without first taking a swim in the sea.

“**Going to the Azores and not swimming is like going to Rome and not seeing the Pope**.” He also mentioned that the Azores are “**a land of enchantment and wonder**.”
