Castelo Branco Hill – Faial Island

The Castelo Branco Hill is located in the municipality of Horta, on the Faial Island. This is a volcanic dome formed about ten thousand years ago and is connected to Faial Island by a narrow strip of land.

Due to its geological significance and interest, it is one of the most important attractions in the parish that shares its name, Castelo Branco.

Characteristics

Castelo Branco Hill is a natural reserve formed by various geological strata resulting from a coastal volcanic eruption that occurred around 30,000 years ago.

Its name is related to its shape, which resembles a castle, and also to its white color on the walls.

It is covered with pumiceous pyroclasts from the Caldeira volcano. The typical whitish coloration of the hill comes from the trachyte rock.

Access

Access can be made by car or on foot. If you prefer to drive, you can park near the rock. If you choose to walk, you can take the hiking trail that starts by the regional road and leads to the southern coast towards Castelo Branco Hill.

Hiking Trail

The hiking trail to Castelo Branco Hill is rated easy and is 4 kilometers long, taking about one and a half hours to complete.

The trail is partially located in a protected area and leads visitors to the Natural Reserve of Castelo Branco Hill. It begins along the regional road and follows a dirt path. Along the way, visitors pass by some fields until reaching the coast, where the magnificent hill can be observed.

Along the way, you will pass by the Gruta das Anelares, a volcanic tube about 35 meters long. This site is not accessible for visitation due to exploration difficulties. When you reach the coast, you will be able to see Castelo Branco Hill, but be cautious when climbing the hill due to potential hazards.
