Graça Market – Ponta Delgada – São Miguel Island
Graça Market is located in the parish of São Pedro, in the city and municipality of Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel Island. The market is one of Ponta Delgada’s most emblematic spots and is situated in a small and bustling square.
The most prominent products here are the pineapples, one of São Miguel Island’s largest exports. You’ll also find other delicious fruits, vegetables, and root crops such as bananas, cherimoyas, pepper, and yam. For example, the pepper can be salted or spicy and is a staple in regional recipes, often served with fresh cheese.
Additionally, at Graça Market, you’ll find sections for fishmongers and butchers, as well as a few shops selling flowers, souvenirs, and various regional agricultural and craft products. It preserves the tradition of direct and fair trade, without intermediaries.
When visiting Graça Market, be sure to stop by one of the island’s most famous shops, O Rei dos Queijos (“The King of Cheeses”), located right next to the market. This highly traditional shop sells all the wonderful cheeses produced in the Azorean islands, as well as other fantastic and diverse Azorean products.

History
Before the 19th century, there were no designated locations to sell agricultural products and livestock. All trade occurred on the southern side of the Matriz and at the Arcades of the Quay.
Graça Market was built in 1848 to relocate all the donkeys and agricultural vendors from the Town Square. The aim was to create a new, dignified, and dedicated market space.
At least five different locations were proposed for the construction of this market. The first was the desecrated Church of São José. Other suggested sites included D. Clara Joaquina’s land, at Largo do Colégio, the block occupied by the old Misericórdia in Matriz, the site now home to the Micaelense Club, and lastly, the grounds of Graça.
In 1852, a marble fountain was inaugurated at the center of Graça Market, later moved to Largo do Poço Velho.
Today, Graça Market is one of the most visited tourist spots in Ponta Delgada, offering a wide variety of fresh, high-quality regional products.
