Ribeira do Ferreiro Well (Poço da Alagoinha) – Flores Island

The Ribeira do Ferreiro Well, also known as Poço da Alagoinha or Lagoa das Patas, is located in the parish of Fajã Grande, Flores Island, part of the Azores archipelago.

Considered by many to be a paradise and a must-visit spot on the island, this incredible well is highlighted by the cliff from which the waters of various waterfalls flow, along with dense vegetation that completes this Azorean wonder. It is important to note that Poço da Alagoinha is part of the Morro Alto Forest Reserve, an area dedicated to environmental protection and permanent preservation.

History of Ribeira do Ferreiro Well

It is believed that the clearing of the western coast of Flores began in the 16th century. The island is one of the most beautiful in the Azores, reflecting the riches that compose it. The name Lagoa das Patas arose due to the large number of these animals, especially during the migration season of wild ducks, which use the lagoon as a habitat.

And since the name Flores Island comes from the variety of flowers and plants found in this locality, Poço da Alagoinha is no different. The place is filled with a diverse flora, highlighted by its phenomenal colors.

Another interesting point in the region’s history is the various sustainable accommodations, such as Aldeia da Cuada (Rural Tourism), which was abandoned around the 1960s due to the emigration of the local population to America. Currently, the village has been restored thanks to the couple Teotónia and Carlos Silva, in order to preserve the culture and architecture of past times, marked by agriculture and stone houses.

Attraction and Walking Trail

To reach the Ribeira do Ferreiro Well, you will walk about 700 meters on a walking trail (approximately 10 to 15 minutes), starting near the bridge over the Ribeira do Ferreiro. Since it is not possible to reach the site by car, it is recommended to wear appropriate footwear due to the uneven ground.

Although the ascent is a bit challenging, the reward at the end is gratifying. The feeling of walking among the trees is unique; feeling all the nature around you is indescribable. A tip: if you visit in the afternoon, the sun will be facing the waterfall, providing a sensational green lighting. It is worth planning your visit for this time!

Finally, it is worth noting that this route is part of the PR2FLO trail, which is about 13 km long. The route starts at the Church of Lajedo and ends at Fajã Grande. For hiking enthusiasts, this is the main option for those on Flores, with an average walking duration of 3 hours and 30 minutes, filled with breathtaking landscapes.
