The Island of Pico is the second-largest island in the Azores Archipelago. It has a surface area of 447 km2 and measures 42 km in length and 20 km in width. It owes its name to the majestic volcanic mountain (Ponta do Pico or Montanha do Pico) that culminates in a pronounced peak known locally as Pico Pequeno or Piquinho. It is the highest mountain in Portugal and the third-highest mountain that rises from the Atlantic, reaching an altitude of 2,351 meters.
