The Legend of Sete Cidades tells that many years ago, in this parish, there was a kingdom where a beautiful young princess with blue eyes lived.

She loved her life in the countryside, and one of her favorite activities was walking through the fields, smelling the flowers, dipping her feet in the streams, and observing the beauty of the hills and valleys of the kingdom.

One day, during her walks, she passed by a flock. With the flock was a shepherd with green eyes with whom she decided to talk. They talked a lot about animals, flowers, the weather, and the simple beauty around them. From then on, they met every day to talk.

After several days and weeks, the princess kept meeting the shepherd in the same place, and they eventually fell in love, exchanging vows of eternal love.

The King, however, did not like knowing that the princess and the shepherd were meeting, so he forbade her from seeing the shepherd again. He wanted his daughter to marry a prince from a neighboring kingdom, not a mere shepherd.

The princess reluctantly accepted her father’s cruel decision and asked the King to let her meet the shepherd one last time to say goodbye, which he allowed.

They met for the last time in the green fields where they had met, and as usual, they talked about their love and the separation imposed by the King.

As they talked, they cried. They cried so much that the tears from the princess’s blue eyes flowed down the valley, forming the blue lagoon. Meanwhile, the tears from the shepherd’s green eyes fell so intensely that they formed the green lagoon.

The two lovers said their final goodbye while their tears formed two lagoons that would remain eternally together. Just as they could never unite, they would also never separate.

Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde are collectively known as the “Lagoa das Sete Cidades“. On sunny days, the colors of both lagoons can be seen intensely, as shown in the photo above.
