Santa Iria Viewpoint – Ribeira Grande, São Miguel Island
The Santa Iria Viewpoint is located near the parish of Porto Formoso, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, on the São Miguel Island. From the viewpoint, one can see a lush landscape surrounded by the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Facing the Bay of Santa Iria, the viewpoint offers a beautiful view of the northern coast of São Miguel Island, marked by large tea plantations and the locality of Porto Formoso. This viewpoint is situated at an altitude of 190 meters.

History of the Santa Iria Viewpoint
On the slopes of this viewpoint, the Battle of Ladeira da Velha took place in August 1831. Of great national significance, it was through this battle that D. Pedro IV defeated the troops of his brother, D. Miguel, paving the way for the Concession of Évora Monte, which ended the Portuguese Civil War.
In 2004, a tile panel was placed at the Santa Iria Viewpoint to commemorate this historical event. The tile bears the following inscription:
“The Battle of Ladeira da Velha
On August 3, 1831, in the Montes da Ladeira da Velha, located to the east of this viewpoint, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, the troops loyal to D. Pedro IV defeated the army of his brother, the King of absolutist tradition, D. Miguel. It was a decisive battle. Through it, the victory of the liberal forces in the Azores archipelago was consolidated, as well as the path that, after a bloody civil war, would lead in Évora Monte, on May 26, 1834, to the fall of absolutism and the restoration of the Constitutional Charter in Portugal.”

The viewpoint has parking facilities and is located 9 km after the Ribeira Grande roundabout, on the left side for those traveling on the ER-1-1, making it a must-stop location where you can capture beautiful photos.
