Fajã do Ouvidor – São Jorge Island

The Fajã do Ouvidor is located on the northern coast of São Jorge Island, in the parish of Norte Grande, municipality of Velas, in the Azores archipelago. It is considered one of the largest fajãs on this island and is highly sought after by tourists from various parts of the world.

Also known as “Fajã do Porto”, this location has a viewpoint that offers a fantastic panoramic view of São Jorge Island, the Atlantic Ocean, and the three fajãs in the region. Fajã do Ouvidor is well developed, with residential houses, commerce, and the best port on the northern coast, while still preserving its rural characteristics from the past.

History of Fajã do Ouvidor

Fajã do Ouvidor was formed by basaltic lava flows from the central volcanic mountain of São Jorge Island, specifically from the Pico Areeiro, located 3 km away and formed around 2,530 years ago. It was named after one of its principal landowners, Valério Lopes de Azevedo, the “Ouvidor” (magistrate) of the Captaincy of the Donatory.

Nearby is the Church of Nossa Senhora das Neves, in the parish of Norte Grande, built in 1762, which holds historical significance for São Jorge Island, as this was where the Yam Revolt occurred.

In 1903, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Dores was built, where every third Sunday in September, festivities in honor of the patron saint are held, a tradition maintained to this day at Fajã do Ouvidor.

Another highlight is the beautiful stone houses, some with wooden shutters or entirely whitewashed, as well as the small farming plots where crops such as corn and vines are grown. These play an important economic role in the area, as does the port, which supports recreational and fishing boats.

Fajã do Ouvidor is a key geological site of the Azores Geopark, holding significant regional value and being the subject of scientific, educational, and geotourism studies. Part of its area is included in the Protected Landscape Area of the Northern Fajãs and the ZEC of the Northeast Coast and Ponta do Topo.

Attractions

For those who enjoy hiking, it is recommended to take the trail starting from Pico do Pedro, heading towards Pico da Esperança, the highest point on the island at 1,053 meters, and finally arriving at Fajã do Ouvidor. This hike takes approximately four hours and offers incredible views from start to finish! But here’s a tip: good physical preparation is required to cover the 17 km distance.

Another attraction not to be missed is the viewpoint, where you can not only see Fajã do Ouvidor, but also the Fajãs of Ribeira da Areia and Ponta, the only lava fajãs on the northern coast of São Jorge Island. If the weather is clear, you can also spot the neighboring islands of Graciosa and Terceira. The blue of the sea stands out on sunny days. Be sure to capture fantastic photographs!
