Chapel of Our Lady of Victories – a Demonstration of Faith

José do Canto is one of the most illustrious citizens of São Miguel.

His innovative and benevolent spirit made him one of the best-known figures in the entire archipelago. Among his many contributions were the construction and maintenance of an asylum and the financing of improvements in agricultural techniques used in the region.

His summer house, on the shores of Furnas, still houses the Chapel of Our Lady of Victories, built as a demonstration of faith when his wife fell ill. He had married her when she was only 15 years old.

Concerned with the completion of the work, he left in his will the explicit desire that the construction be finished with the same care and dedication he would have given.

He lived long enough to witness the inauguration of the magnificent building, which houses the family mausoleum and has become one of the main tourist attractions in the entire region.
