Caldeirão – Corvo Island
The formation known as Caldeirão, on Corvo Island, the smallest in the Azores archipelago, draws attention for its beauty and unique setting, the result of the sedimentation of a volcanic crater.
The lagoon that was formed in this natural depression is 300 meters deep and occupies a perimeter of 3.7 km, with several small lagoons and almost a dozen river “islets”.
The highest point on the slope of Caldeirão is known as Morro dos Homens, and is approximately 720 meters high in relation to sea level, and from this point, visitors can have a general panorama of the most famous natural depression on Ilha do Caldeirão. Crow.
The extinct volcano, called Monte Gordo, houses this natural attraction of the island and provides moments of contemplation for adventurers who want to discover and explore the region.

An island full of stories and legends
Caldeirão is part of the Ilha do Corvo Natural Park, an important natural reserve that advocates the preservation of the entire region. Discovered more than 500 years ago, Corvo Island was the scene, over the centuries, of major battles and also the constant presence of pirates and corsairs, who used the island as a resting point and also to replenish their supplies.

The first permanent inhabitants settled on the island around 1580 and dedicated themselves to agriculture, in the few cultivable areas of the island, as well as fishing and raising livestock. These activities continue today and are the basis of support for its inhabitants, although more recently tourism has also gained importance in the region’s economy.
