Café Central – Ponta Delgada
It’s called Café Central and it’s one of the most iconic establishments in the Historic Center of the city of Ponta Delgada in São Miguel. This space first opened its doors in October 1924 by José Mathias Tavares.
Given its location in Largo da Matriz, it has always been a space that welcomed thousands of tourists and locals, being a point of reference. A large terrace that was often crowded.
A refined space with potential that unfortunately ended up being closed for a period. It reopened briefly in 2016 but closed again soon after.
With the high influx of tourists to the Azores, many wondered why such a centrally located space was closed. However, this question will no longer arise, as in November 2017 it was reopened by the Grupo Anjos.
This group has several investments in the restaurant and bar sector, such as the also iconic Cantinho dos Anjos. A new project for Café Central that was thought out in detail and executed meticulously.
Rui Anjos and Ana Sofia Anjos decided to keep its name while changing the concept and operating philosophy to elevate the good name of Café Central and bring this space with a lot of history and moments to locals and tourists.
A meeting point
According to Pedro, this “was our meeting point”. “A few years ago, when I was 16/17 years old and not everyone had cell phones, we would arrange at school to meet at Central at 10 pm. That was where we gathered the group and then headed to other nightlife spots.” He also recalls, “I have many memories of this space, good old times. I was very happy about its reopening and I hope to live and relive good moments.”

Curiosity: “Coffee Black as the Devil but Pure as an Angel”
It seems that somehow this space was destined to belong to Grupo Anjos. Coincidence?
