Facho Viewpoint – Praia da Vitória, Terceira Island

The Facho Viewpoint is located on the Serra do Facho, in the municipality of Praia da Vitória, on Terceira Island. The viewpoint offers an exceptional view over the sea, the bay, and the Marina of Praia da Vitória.

One of the most sought-after spots by visitors, the Facho Viewpoint enchants with its unique panorama that stretches from the Serra do Facho and the Cume mountains to the sandy beach of Praia da Vitória bay.

History of the Viewpoint

The name, Facho Viewpoint, comes from the fact that a fire was kept burning at this point every night, serving as a warning beacon for navigators.

During the Portuguese Civil War, which took place from 1828 to 1834, the system of beacons was reestablished in the Serra do Facho and various other Portuguese localities, allowing for over 60 different messages to be sent using flags on cross masts.

To reach the viewpoint, you can use a staircase on the hillside from the city side or drive up the road to the top.

The Facho Viewpoint is home to the Monument to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a six-meter tall bronze statue sculpted by micaelense Álvaro Raposo de França. This monument, built on a 16-meter high pedestal, was created in honor of the city’s patroness and took 16 years to complete, starting in 1983 and inaugurated in 1999.
