History of the Ponta da Barca Lighthouse
On February 1, 1930, the Ponta da Barca Lighthouse began operating. It consists of a 23-meter-tall tower and stands at 71 meters in altitude. To ensure the proper functioning of the lighthouse and safeguard navigation, a catadioptric dioptric lens apparatus was installed, with a BBT gas eclipsing lamp as its light source.
The access road to the Ponta da Barca Lighthouse, which passes through Santa Cruz da Graciosa, underwent major reconstruction in 1935 to facilitate tourist arrivals. Over the years, the lighthouse residences evolved to house four lighthouse keepers.
In terms of electricity, in 1958, the lighthouse had a 3000W 110V light source, reaching 41 miles. However, in 1980, it was replaced with a 1000W 120V source, reducing its range to 20 miles.
In 1978, the Ponta da Barca Lighthouse sustained some damage due to a strong thunderstorm that hit it. However, the lighthouse was restored and has maintained this appearance to the present day. It is owned by the Portuguese Navy.
The 80th anniversary celebration of the Ponta da Barca Lighthouse took place in March 2010, featuring an exhibition dedicated to maritime signaling and the history of the lighthouse. Additionally, the director of the Graciosa Museum, the Port Captain, and the lighthouse keeper gave an important presentation to those who attended the event.
