Natural Park of Ribeira dos Caldeirões
The Natural Park of Ribeira dos Caldeirões is located in the parish of Achada, municipality of Nordeste, on the beautiful São Miguel Island, Azores archipelago. It belongs to a protected area on the slopes of Serra da Tronqueira, part of the course of Ribeira do Guilherme, where the famous Ribeira do Guilherme Botanical Garden is situated.

Natural Park of Ribeira dos Caldeirões
One of the most striking features of this spectacular Natural Park is its variety of Macaronesian flora, along with the strong predominance of the Laurisilva Forest, particularly noted for its large tree ferns.
It is also possible to observe abundant masses of hydrangeas and cryptomerias. Another highlight of the Natural Park of Ribeira dos Caldeirões is the beautiful waterfall, as well as the water falls and the charming lake, which provide the park’s water supply found along the river course.

Preservation is very important for the maintenance and conservation of the site; therefore, the Natural Park is included in the Special Protection Zone of Pico da Vara and Ribeira do Guilherme.

The Water Mills
There are five water mills within the Natural Park of Ribeira dos Caldeirões, three of which are classified as Public Interest Properties by Resolution No. 79/97, dated April 10, published in the Official Journal of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, belonging to the Municipality of Nordeste.
The mills have immense historical value for São Miguel Island and the Azores, as they originated in the 16th century, and their constructions were fundamental for various families in the region, serving as a source of livelihood and income.
The old millers’ houses also stand out, providing visitors with a sense of travel back in time.
Currently, one of the mills is still operational, maintaining a miller who works daily, while another mill houses an ethnographic museum. You can also appreciate corn, cornmeal, and learn more about the entire process.

The millers’ houses have ceased operations and have now been transformed into a craft shop, rural accommodation, and a café, offering information to tourists.
