History of Monte Brasil

Many believe that the volcanic eruption that created Monte Brasil occurred more than 20,000 years ago, with large explosions and pyroclastic clouds everywhere. This phenomenon led to the formation of the Monte Brasil peninsula, created by the accumulation of ash from the direct fallout of volcanic material during the eruption.

Thus, Terceira Island gained approximately 500 meters in length and 500 meters in width. For a better view, it is recommended to climb Monte Brasil, where you can observe the connection between the island and the extinct volcano. Monte Brasil is considered the largest volcanic structure on the coast of the Azores.

At the end of the 16th century, the São João Baptista Castle was built in the Monte Brasil area, a true Filipino fortress and one of the largest fortifications of its time. The main purpose was to defend the region from pirate and corsair attacks, who sought the riches carried by the India Route ships.

Another notable construction is the Ermida de Santo António da Grota, built in 1615. The hermitage can be accessed by entering the São João Baptista Fortress from the east and passing the guardhouse toward Monte Brasil.

Finally, there are the ruins of the Forte de São Benedito, an important defense installation from that time. Be sure to visit and appreciate these constructions located on Monte Brasil, which are a part of its rich history.
