Places to Visit in Praia da Vitória – Terceira Island
Praia da Vitória is a city and municipality located on the eastern coast of the Terceira Island. The city was one of the first settlements on Terceira Island, beginning its colonization in the 15th century.
Its port was responsible for the city’s significant development, as commercial vessels frequented the area for trade within the Archipelago. Praia da Vitória is a historic location with many monuments reflecting ancient times.
Praia da Vitória, which was formerly called just “Praia,” received its second name “Vitória” in 1829. Agriculture, livestock farming, and its port were the main contributors to its development starting in the 15th century.
Its development was hindered by a natural disaster known as the Caída da Praia, during which significant earthquakes caused widespread destruction in the city. In the 20th century, a new port and military airport were constructed, leading to the city’s resurgence.
