The Island of São Jorge is located in the center of the Central Group of the Azores Archipelago, separated from the Island of Pico by a 15 km channel. São Jorge is 56 km long and 8 km wide, with a total area of 246.25 km2. The coast is steep and almost vertical, especially to the north, and is interrupted by small flat coastal areas—known as fajãs.
