Santana – Lajido

The trail starts along the regional road, at the boundary between the villages of Santana and São Vicente, already in the parish of Santo António, on the island of Pico. Before setting off, it’s worth following the access on the left to the whale watching point. The actual route begins on a narrow path that passes between two houses and climbs uphill.

About 700 metres further on, the path turns right onto the asphalt road and, shortly after, begins the descent towards Baía do Gasparal, crossing orchards and small vineyard enclosures. Once in the bay, after going around a tidal pool, keep to the right of the houses, always hugging the coast, heading towards Ponta Negra.

From here, the trail advances through incense trees (Pittosporum undulatum) and heaths (Erica azorica) until it becomes a narrow path cut into basalt rock. After passing the cluster of houses at Cabrito, turn right and continue to the Ermida de São Mateus.

Back on the asphalt road, turn right again and continue in the direction of Lajido, crossing through the village of Arcos. The trail ends in the heart of Lajido, next to the Interpretative Centre for the Landscape of Wine Culture and the tidal pool beside it.
