Pico do Pedro – Pico da Esperança – Fajã do Ouvidor

This linear route crosses the central zone of São Jorge along the mountain ridge, connecting the Pico of Pedro to Fajã do Ouvidor, on the northern coast. Along the way it passes the Pico of Esperança, the highest point on the island, at 1053 metres. Much of the trail unfolds across the central volcanic ridge, at altitudes between 800 and 1000 metres, so it is recommended to do it on days with good weather and visibility. The entire section is located in protected areas: the habitat and species management protected zone of Pico of Esperança and Central Plateau, and the geosites of the Central Volcanic Ridge, Fajã do Ouvidor and Ribeira da Areia.

The departure is at the base of Pico of Pedro, next to the EN3 road, following an earth path. The mountain is skirted along the northern slope and the markings are followed until the arrow appears indicating the detour to Pico of Esperança. Until then, the trail winds around other cones, such as the peaks of Carvão, Junça, Verde, Montoso and Morro Pelado. Once at the highest point on the island, it is possible to walk around the crater and observe the lake that lies within it.

Returning to the main path, the route now continues downhill along the central ridge. It passes Pico of Areiro and, further on, Pico Pinheiro, both with lakes inside their respective craters. Ahead is a junction with the GR 02 SJO, where it is possible to connect to Fajã dos Cubres.

From this point, the route heads north towards Fajã do Ouvidor, crossing woodland areas, agricultural paths and some asphalt sections. Unlike the typical detrital fajãs of São Jorge, this one is of lava origin and large dimensions. The flat area that formed this way allowed for greater development of the place, with local commerce, a fishing port and a bathing area.
