Trail details
The Great Route of Santa Maria, the Grand Trail of Santa Maria, makes a complete circuit around the island in a circular route of approximately 78 kilometres. Santa Maria is the oldest island in the Açores archipelago, at approximately 8 million years old, and it is this long history that makes the path so interesting from a geomorphological perspective.
Along the way you will find clear signs of this age: marks of various types of erosion and traces of sea level variations that have shaped the landscape and given the island some of its distinctive features. These are places of great scenic beauty, but also with educational and scientific value. Due to its position in the Nordeste Atlantic, the archipelago functions as a stopping point and rest area for various species of migratory birds, which you can observe in different sections of the route.
The trail is organised into four stages of approximately 20 kilometres each, so it is advisable to plan your walk according to your fitness level, your interests and the time available. Take advantage of the bathing areas scattered around the island to rest and recover your strength, and pass through urban and rural centres to resupply with whatever you need along the way. From time to time small detours appear, all properly signposted, that lead to viewpoints with stunning natural landscapes.
As wild camping is not permitted, overnight stays should be made at designated sites between stages, Rural Tourism accommodation units and hostels. Also bear in mind that the route crosses Protected Areas and Nature Reserves: preserving this natural habitat and its biodiversity is a responsibility of all those who pass through here.
