Trail details
The Great Route of São Jorge (West), also identified as GR02 SJO, crosses approximately half of the island in a linear route of around 52 km. It starts at Ponta dos Rosais, at the western extreme, and ends at Fajã dos Cubres, already on the north coast. There, those who wish to extend their journey have access to the connection to GR01 SJO, the Great Route of São Jorge 01, which covers the other half of the island and reaches the Topo, at the eastern tip.
The route thrives on the contrast between two worlds. On one hand, the plateau of the island’s interior, where the volcanic cones that gave rise to São Jorge were formed. On the other, the high and steep slopes that plunge vertically down to small flat platforms at sea level, the famous fajãs that give this island its reputation. It is this balance between the highlands and the coast that defines the landscape throughout the entire trail.
Along the way there are plenty of opportunities to refresh your legs in the various bathing areas that the route encounters. Passing through settlements, both urban and rural, also serves to replenish supplies and regain strength before continuing the journey.
This great trail is designed in two stages, one of around 22 km and another of around 30 km. It is worth organising the walk according to your fitness level, available time, and what you want to see. Between stages there are places prepared for overnight stays, such as Rural Tourism accommodation units and a hostel, since wild camping is not permitted.
