The GR01 SJO crosses approximately half of São Jorge in a linear route, from the eastern tip of the island, at Topo, to Fajã dos Cubres, already on the North coast. In total, it’s nearly 40 km, crossing very different landscapes of the island.

The trail alternates between the interior plateau, where the volcanic cones that formed the island emerged, and the high, steep slopes that plunge sharply down to small flat platforms at sea level. It’s from this meeting between altitude and water that the fajãs are born, the most emblematic landscapes of São Jorge.

Along the route you’ll find several bathing areas where you can take a dip and regain your strength. Passing through urban and rural centres also gives you the chance to resupply with whatever you need to continue walking.

To help with planning, this long-distance trail is divided into two stages, one of approximately 25 km and another of around 15 km. Organise your walk according to your fitness level, interests, and availability.

If you’re thinking of spreading the route over more than one day, there are places prepared for overnight stays between stages, in Rural Tourism accommodation and hostels. Wild camping is not permitted, so count on these spaces to rest.
