The Grande Rota das Flores follows much of the island’s coastline and connects Santa Cruz das Flores to Lajedo, a parish on the southwest coast. It is a linear and demanding route with high difficulty: there are sections not recommended for those with vertigo, particularly the descent at Rocha do Risco.

Along the way, volcanic landscapes succeed one another, dotted with small isolated settlements and vegetation abundant in endemic species, especially on the nordeste coast and the cliffs of the western coast. Whenever possible, take advantage of the various bathing areas you’ll encounter and pass through urban and rural centres to resupply what you need and regain your strength.

The trail is divided into two stages, approximately 21 km and 26 km. The first connects Santa Cruz to Ponta Delgada, winding through long and deep valleys carved by streams—this abundance of water justified the hydroelectric plant located in the initial section. It then follows the nordeste coast, with abrupt and highly jagged terrain, offering views of islets, rocks, headlands and coves that serve as nesting areas for various seabirds.

In the second stage, from Ponta Delgada to Lajedo, the low and regular cliff face between Ponta Delgada and Ponta do Albarnaz gives way to one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes in the Açores. Here the lava and detrital fajãs, such as Fajã Grande and Fajãzinha, are separated from the Central Plateau by a long fossil cliff approximately 300 metres high, from which countless streams flow, forming impressive waterfalls on the slope, notably the Poço da Alagoinha and its lagoon at the base of the cliff. Settlements like Mosteiro, the parish with the smallest resident population in the country, lend a unique charm to the entire surrounding area.

Given the significant changes in altitude involved, it’s worth planning your walk according to your fitness level, your interests and available time. And, since it crosses several watercourses, be mindful of increased water flow in the days following periods of heavy rain.
