Caminhos de Santa Luzia

This Pico trail starts near Miraguaia, in Santa Luzia, and finishes at the Church of Santa Luzia, with approximately 3 hours of walking. It begins downhill, always heading towards the sea, crossing the landscape of vineyard culture classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, until reaching Lajido.

Along this first section, pay attention to the ground: it’s easy to spot the so-called “rilheiros”, the furrows left in the lava by carts that once transported wine. At Lajido it’s worth stopping to visit the museum and observe up close the various geological formations that mark the location.

From here the path reverses and begins to climb, passing through Forno dos Frades, another point worth noting. About 3 km after starting the ascent, you’ll reach the regional road; follow it to the left for about 500 metres, until you reach the Church of Santa Luzia.

Next to the church, turn right, following the signage. From here the trail continues on beaten earth, through groves of pau-branco (Picconia azorica), heather (Erica azorica) and incense tree (Pittosporum undulatum), among other species. This second half is circular and ends again at the Church of Santa Luzia, where you will have already passed.

Please note that the trail crosses a Protected Landscape Zone. Walkers are asked not to pick fruit at any point along the trail.
