Algar do Carvão
Algar do Carvão is a volcanic cone located in the geographical center of the island. This is a place of excellence and the few in the world where you can enjoy and walk inside an extinct volcano.The route is all done through a few hundred stairs. During the tour you can explore the depths of this fascinating geological wonder. At the deepest point of the cave, you will see a bright pond (during the summer months and due to the lack of rain it may dry temporarily).

After leaving the airport of Terceira Island (5 minutes), if you have the opportunity and the weather is clear, make your first stop at the viewpoint of the Facho. From this viewpoint you will have a privileged view over the city of Praia da Vitória and its Port.
Serra do Cume
One of the favorite places for the best photos of the Terceira Island landscape. Serra do Cume has a high view, about 545m high on flat and green terrain – an authentic paradise of nature. You can also see small parishes nearby and the Atlantic Ocean.
In the main city of Terceira Island, in Angra do Heroísmo, Monte Brasil is what remains of an extinct volcano. This forms a naturally formed peninsula. A great location also for panoramic views of the city. You can meet him via an existing pedestrian track or take a car up to the top of it. In Monte Brasil is located the Fort of Saint John the Baptist – the oldest fortress occupied by the Portuguese army. You can also find a cross that indicates the discovery of Terceira Island in 1432.
Of the various activities available in Terceira (cycling, kayaking, etc.) walking is undoubtedly one of the activities to do. You can walk through the Bays of Agualva , a course with about 4km.Alternatively, you can just visit the on-site lookout and enjoy its spectacular views.
In Santa Bárbara there is an inactive volcano in the Serra de Santa Bárbara, which is the highest point of the island at 1,021m. In this place you can visit the Interpretation Center of Santa Bárbara, where you will get to know and learn a little more about the natural heritage of Terceira Natural Park.

Ponta das Contendas
Already in the southeastern part of the Island you will find the Ponta das Contendas Lighthouse, built in 1934. A stroll along the south coast will give you several breathtaking views, such as the beautiful Baía da Mina.
Cities and places to visit in Terceira Island
Praia da Vitória
Being close to the Airport, this may be your first city to visit. In this city you can find and enjoy its cobblestone streets, colorful churches, the Town Hall building, the modern marina and the beautiful beach. The latter, quite extensive, makes it one of the places most sought after by tourists and locals in the summer months.
Angra do Heroísmo
If you thought that the city of Praia da Vitoria was colorful, Angra do Heroísmo raises the scale to a higher level. There are no dead zones or boring structures in this city. The entire city center was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 given its unique architecture and cultural significance. In Angra there is much to explore: museums, cathedrals, gardens and restaurants.
Near Angra do Heroísmo you can find the locality of Porto Judeu. Stroll through the picturesque town center with some equally colorful buildings, and head to the coast where you will find the natural pools. Enjoy the stay for a pedestrian trail to know the Furnas do Enxofre. Do not miss the opportunity to stop at the viewpoint of the Cruz do Canário viewpoint where you can enjoy the view on the south coast of Terceira as well as the Ilhéu das Cabras.
