Fajã das Almas

Fajã das Almas, on the south coast of São Jorge, is one of the most beautiful places in the Açores to practise stand up paddle. There is no sandy beach here to enter the water: both entry and exit are made via a small pier, in a simple and straightforward manner.

Once you’re up on the board, the choice is yours: paddle east or west. Either direction is worthwhile, with corners of great beauty, several shallow areas and bays, always with the mountain of Pico on the neighbouring island serving as a backdrop across the channel.

To enjoy the spot safely, choose days with light winds or northerly winds and calm seas. It’s also advisable to keep your paddle close to the coast, because the tidal variation in the channel between São Jorge and Pico can generate currents.
