Cubres

Located to the east of Fajã, on the north coast of São Jorge, Cubres spot is a left-hand point break that comes alive when the swell picks up. Unlike the pico at Fajã de Santo Cristo, here the wave breaks much closer to the rocks, giving it a powerful and demanding character. On the right days, some right-handers can form, but it’s the left that defines this place.

The bottom is made of shingle and ideal conditions combine south to south-easterly swell, northerly wind and mid-tide rising, with waves in the 2 to 3 metre range. It’s a consistent pico of good quality when these factors align, suited for intermediate to experienced surfers, not for those taking their first paddles.

Access is by car, but pay attention when entering the water: both entry and exit are made across the rocks, so it’s worth observing the sea carefully before advancing and choosing your timing calmly.
