Corpo Santo – Baixio do Açougue

On the south coast of São Miguel, Corpo Santo – Baixio do Açougue is a reef break with a rocky bottom that only reveals its true potential when southern swell exceeds two metres. In these conditions, it transforms into one of the most powerful waves in this area of the island, with sets typically ranging between 2 and 3 metres.

The wave forms a pico in a triangular shape that opens to both sides, left and right, but it’s the left that makes the journey worthwhile: it has more face to work with and ends right above the rocks near the shore, which demands extra caution on the exit. To catch the spot at its best, look for low tide and north to nordeste wind, which holds the southern swell nicely. Consistency is low, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the forecast to avoid missing the right days.

This is not a pico for taking your first steps: between the wave’s power and the rocky bottom, it’s reserved for experienced surfers. Access is by car, which makes it easier to arrive with your gear and assess conditions before entering the water.
