In Graciosa, Calhau Miudo is the spot that works most consistently, as it receives swells from practically the entire northern quadrant, from NW to NE. The wave breaks in reef break over a rocky bottom and splits into three peaks: in the centre of the bay there is one that opens both lefts and rights, on the east side a right breaks and on the west side a left. Which of them is working depends on the swell direction and how it rotates as it enters the bay.

The best sessions happen with waves between 1 and 3 metres, at mid-tide and with the tide coming in, ideally with wind from S to SE. Given the reading the sea here demands, it is a pico more suited for intermediate and experienced surfers.

It’s easily accessible by car. Once in the water, entries and exits are made through the rocks of the inside, so it’s worth bringing booties to protect your feet.
