Baixio da Viola – Lomba da Maia

Baixio da Viola, in Lomba da Maia, in São Miguel, is one of the major big wave references on the island. We’re talking about a reef break that crashes over a rocky seabed, practically in open ocean, and opens in both directions, with left and right-handers. On days when it’s working, the wave reaches between 3 and 6 metres, which explains the spot’s fame among those seeking big surf in the Açores.

The best conditions arise at mid-tide, with north swell and south wind. It’s not an easy pico to read: positioning at take-off demands considerable experience and the currents require constant attention. On the other hand, there’s a wide channel that provides some safety margin for entering and exiting the break zone.

Access is on foot, with a walk from the car park to Praia da Viola, which serves as the entry and exit point from the water. It’s an isolated spot reserved exclusively for experienced big wave surfers and professionals, preferably with boards above 9 feet.
