Portas da Cidade – Ponta Delgada – São Miguel, Azores

The **Portas da Cidade** (City Gates) are considered a hallmark of the city of Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel Island. This architectural landmark is located in the heart of the city, in the parish of São Sebastião. It consists of three arches, with the royal and city coat of arms displayed in the middle.

History of the Portas da Cidade

Initially, in the 18th century (1783), the gates were located at the now-extinct quay. Later, in 1952, they were moved to Praça Gonçalo Velho Cabral, where they remain today, after renovations were carried out on Av. Infante Dom Henrique – also known as the Avenida Marginal de Ponta Delgada.
