ItalianoThe Portas da Cidade are one of the most iconic landmarks of the city of Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel. An architectural landmark right in the heart of the city, in the parish of São Sebastião. Comprised of three arches, the central one featuring the royal and city coats of arms.

Originally built in the 18th century (1783), they were located on the old quay. Later, in 1952, they were moved to Praça Gonçalo Velho Cabral, where they remain to this day, following construction work on Av. Infante Dom Henrique – also known as Avenida Marginal de Ponta Delgada.
This monument – a true picture-postcard of Ponta Delgada – has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1953.

It’s a very central location where many of Ponta Delgada’s events take place, serving as a backdrop for the presentation of the Azores Airlines Rallye, the traditional Holy Spirit Festivals and the Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Through its arches, you can also admire the Historic Centre, where you’ll find the beautiful Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião (known as the Main Church) – see the photo above. Also near the Portas da Cidade is the Raiz Bar, an excellent spot for a great time.

Enjoy the area surrounding the city gates, where you’ll find traditional shops, several banks, as well as souvenir and gift shops from the Azores.
