History of the Portas da Cidade
Initially, in the 18th century (1783), the gates were located at the now-extinct quay. Later, in 1952, they were moved to Praça Gonçalo Velho Cabral, where they remain today, after renovations were carried out on Av. Infante Dom Henrique – also known as the Avenida Marginal de Ponta Delgada.
This monument, an authentic postcard of Ponta Delgada, has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1953.
