Ilhéu das Lagoínhas

The Lagoínhas islet rises off the north coast of Santa Maria, approximately 9 nautical miles from Vila do Porto marina, which can be reached by boat in about 20 minutes. Around the islet, several underwater formations rise from depths of 22 metres, with the shallowest point on the northern slope reaching 5 metres. The average depth is around 15 metres and the current is usually moderate.

On top of these formations, there is abundant seabed life. You will easily encounter wrasse (Thalassoma pavo) and yellow damselfish (Chromis limbata), various species of moray eels, and triggerfish (Balistes carolinensis).

As you descend, groupers (Epinephelus marginatus) and blackspot seabream (Pseudolepidaplois scrofa) begin to appear. With some luck, you may also see small groups of devil rays (Mobula tarapacana) circling around the islet.

It is a spot accessible to all divers, suitable for diving courses and snorkelling trips, and equally interesting for night diving and underwater photography.
