Gruta Funda is a dive designed for those with experience. It is located about 10 nautical miles from Vila do Porto marina, with a boat journey of approximately 25 minutes, in an area where currents are usually felt. The main reason to come here is a large cave, situated between 30 and 40 metres, which requires comfort with deep diving and an Advanced Open Water level.
The geology of the site is what impresses most. The route starts at the top of the reef, around 15 metres, with a long lava tunnel. As you progress, the bottom descends gradually until the cave entrance, with a shape reminiscent of a cathedral, at 33 metres depth, reaching 40 metres inside.
Inside it is common to see large stingrays (Dasyatis pastinaca) resting motionless on the sandy bottom, and narwhal shrimp (Plesionika narval), small and very colourful, hidden in the crevices of the walls. With some luck, schools of large trevally (Pseudocaranx dentex) also appear. It is a perfect setting for underwater photography.
