Baixa da ponta do Marco

At the northwestern tip of Corvo, about 400 metres from the coastline, Baixa da ponta do Marco is the dive site furthest from the island’s port. The top of the reef lies between 20 and 25 metres, in an area where currents are felt, so it is only recommended for experienced divers.

It is precisely this isolation that makes the location interesting for those seeking open water. Here large schools of pelagic species gather, notably amberjacks (Seriola rivoliana), Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda) and yellowmouth barracudas (Sphyraena viridensis) crossing the water column.

From the top, the wall drops vertically to 40 or 45 metres and the seabed is filled with resident fish. It is common to find groupers (Epinephelus marginatus) and dusky groupers (Mycteroperca fusca) of considerable size, stingrays (Dasyatis pastinaca) resting quietly on the substrate, and several species of moray eels hidden in the crevices.
