Despite what its name might suggest, Baixa da Maia is not actually a shallow area, but rather a small islet located less than 500 metres from the coast, directly opposite the locality of Maia, in Santa Maria. The entire surrounding area, within a radius of approximately 150 metres, is classified as a marine reserve and has been closed to fishing precisely because of its value for diving.

This is an exposed site with currents that often range from moderate to strong, although it is usually possible to choose a side of the islet that is more sheltered from the swell and current. However, it is these very conditions that have made the location famous: the moving water attracts pelagic fish that patrol the shallow area, and it is common to encounter large schools of barracudas (Sphyraena viridensis), jacks (Seriola spp.) and trevally (Pseudocaranx dentex).

In practical terms, diving takes place at an average depth of 15 metres and reaches a maximum of 24 metres, making it accessible to divers with Open Water certification. It is a highly sought-after location for underwater photography, given the abundance of marine life it attracts. Access is by boat, with approximately 25 minutes of navigation from Vila do Porto marina.
