Baixa da Feteira

Off the South coast of Açores, near the Ilhéus da Feteira, this reef lies approximately half a mile from shore and is reached by boat, roughly 30 minutes from Porto da Horta. Although the top begins at just 12 metres, it is a dive reserved for experienced divers: the area is exposed, experiences moderate currents, and descends to 32 metres.

The crown of the reef rises steeply, from 30 to 12 metres, and this is where pelagic fish are commonly found. Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda) and sennet (Sphyraena viridensis) circle the top, making this an excellent spot for underwater photography.

On the South side lies the deeper section, at 32 metres, with a distinctive landscape: large specimens of black coral (Antipathella wollastoni) and patches covered in feather duster worms (Sabella spallanzanii). It is also here that you can observe a resident and peaceful grouper (Epinephelus marginatus).

The North side is shallower, around 24 metres, and features a different scenery with large rock boulders. Among them you’ll find comber (Serranus atricauda), red mullet (Mullus surmuletus), and eagle rays (Myliobatis aquila).
