Baía de Entre Montes

Entre Montes Bay is located in a shallow cove off Faial, sheltered from the wind and with weak currents, which makes it versatile for almost any diving plan. Between 6 and 20 metres deep, it’s suitable for both snorkelling and introductory dives as well as night dives or underwater photography outings. Access is by boat, approximately 5 minutes from Horta Port.

The dive route starts along the wall of the imposing Monte da Guia and descends gently to 7 metres. It’s right here, in the crevices and cavities of the rocky formation, that much of the marine life concentrates: several species of moray eels, octopuses (Octopus vulgaris), the striking jewel anemones (Corynactis viridis), hermit crabs (Calcinus tubularis and Dardanus callidus) and various nudibranchs.

Around 15 metres, in the transition between the stone slabs and sand, it’s worth looking for species that usually camouflage themselves on the seabed, such as flatfish (Bothus podas), lizardfish (Synodus saurus), peacock wrasse (Xyrichthys novacula) and red mullet (Mullus surmuletus). Deeper, already on the sandy bottom at 20 metres, stingrays (Dasyatis pastinaca) become frequent and it’s not uncommon to encounter a dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) or small passing schools of fish.
