Âncoras do Ilhéu

Just a few minutes from the marina at Vila Franca do Campo, this small coastal reef holds a collection of centuries-old anchors of varying shapes and sizes. The historical explanation for these findings is straightforward: Vila Franca do Campo was the island’s first capital, and the village’s maritime importance left its mark here on the seabed, a trace of that bustling activity.

The reef extends for about 40 metres and sits midway between the marina and the islet of Vila Franca do Campo, just as you head out to sea. The top of the reef lies at around 14 metres depth, while the sandy bottom appears at approximately 22 metres. Scattered across the structure are roughly ten anchors, with the largest exceeding 2 metres in length.

The proximity to the marine reserve of Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo makes this location especially interesting in terms of marine life. At the top of the reef, various species of moray eels and nudibranchs are common, and further down, across the sand, you’ll encounter large stingrays (Dasyatis pastinaca) and small red mullet (Mullus surmuletus). With weak currents and accessible depths, it’s a peaceful dive, suitable for beginners, night dives, and those seeking excellent underwater photography opportunities.
