Amora

Amora is located on the south coast of São Miguel, in the stretch of sea between Ponta Garça and Ribeira Quente. It is a spot that stands out from the other dive sites on the island: there are no walls or rock formations here, but rather large boulders of rolled stone resting on a sandy bottom. You can reach it by boat, approximately 15 minutes from Vila Franca do Campo Marina or 45 minutes from Ponta Delgada Marina.

The dive begins around 15 to 16 metres and continues descending to 28 metres, the maximum depth of the site, where large groupers are commonly found. The current is moderate and the profile is accessible to all divers, making Amora an interesting spot for those who enjoy underwater photography.

Along the way, you are usually accompanied by blackhead wrasse (Bodianus scrofa), ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta), parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) and dusky groupers (Serranus atricauda). Among the rocks you will find rainbow wrasse (Coris julis), peacock wrasse (Thalassoma pavo), white seabream (Diplodus sargus cadenati), moray eels (Muraena augusti) and salema (Sarpa salpa).

Looking out into the blue, beyond the bottom, you frequently encounter large schools of Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus picturatus), greater amberjack (Seriola spp.) and Atlantic needlefish (Sphyraena viridensis).
