Hotel Monte Palace – the whole truth about the abandoned hotel in the Açores

Hotel Monte Palace is the name of the former 5-star hotel that operated on the island of São Miguel, in the Açores (Portugal), from April 1989 until the end of 1990.

It remained closed with permanent surveillance until 2011, but due to non-payment, the hotel was abandoned and suffered vandalism.

Hotel Monte Palace 1989

Located at Vista do Rei, a viewpoint offering a panoramic view of Lagoa das Sete Cidades, the now-abandoned hotel catches the eye of everyone who passes by and has become a spot for photos and visits by the most curious.

The Monte Palace comprised 88 rooms (one of which was a presidential suite, 4 luxury suites, 4 double rooms with a small lounge, 27 double rooms, and 52 suites).

It featured 2 restaurants, the “Grill Dona Amélia” and the “Restaurante D. Carlos” (the latter in honor of the Portuguese kings who visited Sete Cidades during their reign, hence the origin of the name Vista do Rei attributed to the viewpoint). Guests could also enjoy a bar, 3 conference rooms, game rooms, the “Night Club Chamarrita” disco, a bank, a tobacconist, boutiques, and other shops.
