Caldeira Velha – São Miguel Island
Located in Ribeira Grande, on the island of São Miguel , Azores archipelago , Caldeira Velha is part of a Natural and Regional Monument, possessing great biological diversity and several natural pools on the slope of the Serra da Água de Pau forest, on the regional road Lagoa do Fogo.
The place is formed by pools of thermal waters in an average temperature of 34 degrees and beautiful landscapes, composed by enormous ferns, offering you a unique experience of peace, silence and tranquility.

Since February 2018 residents of the Azores have now been granted free access to the Caldeira Velha Natural Monument . The tourists need to pay an access fee of € 3, and if you wish to take a bath in the thermal waters, the value is € 8.
It is worth mentioning that each person has the right to remain in Caldeira Velha for a maximum period of 2 hours, with a limit of 250 people to visit. Please also note the parking available as it is very small.

História da Caldeira Velha
The Caldeira Velha was originated from the volcanic complex of Lagoa do Fogo. The local puddles are the main highlights of its historical formation. The oldest waterfall cascade has an approximate temperature of 25 degrees, while the most recent one, heated by means of fumaroles, varies between 35º and 38º degrees.
If you want to know more about the history and geology of Caldeira Velha and Ilha de São Miguel, pay a visit to the Interpretation Center. Here you will have a real lesson about the formation of the island, with themes related to biodiversity, geodiversity, geothermal and thermal, as well as souvenirs to buy.

Caldeira Velha underwent a recent restructuring and was closed for 3 weeks at the beginning of 2018, for cleaning and waterproofing the place, guaranteeing more comfort to the visitors.Important to inform that the place has access for people with reduced mobility and also offers a basic infrastructure of bathrooms and showers for visitors.
The main attraction of Caldeira Velha is the magnificent cascade of thermal water. The hot water fall warms up three amazing pools, in the most diverse temperatures, between 26º and 38º degrees. And all this surrounded by incredible nature.

Tip for who will bathe in the thermal waters of Caldeira Velha: the waters have a lot of iron and can change the color of the swimwear. So, avoid wearing new clothes. And remember that the thermal waters are known for their medicinal and therapeutic characteristics, take this opportunity.
Another option is to make the Trail of the Thermal Spring of the Natural Monument of Caldeira Velha, with a round trip of 320 meters, without many difficulties. At the end of the course, you will find the thermal spring, where the waters arise from fractures of trachytic rock outcrops at 32 degrees, due to the geothermal reservoir of Volcano of Fogo.
